Interview with Dr. Lilit Alikhanyan

Dr. McGlennen: Tell me how you were introduced to OralDNA® salivary diagnostics.
Dr. Alikhanyan: I was fortunate enough to have been introduced to OralDNA 5 years ago in a previous office.

Dr. McGlennen: What are the top two things to consider when you select a patient for testing?
Dr. Alikhanyan: As a provider, I look at both the patient’s systemic health and their periodontal health. For example, if a patient has auto-immune issues, gut health concerns, a history of cancer, fertility or menstrual struggles, etc., this signals to me that the patient may greatly benefit from deeper analysis.

Dr. McGlennen: What are the biggest benefits to using salivary diagnostics?
Dr. Alikhanyan: Being able to treat patients with systemic health concerns, or potential health risks, at a deeper level than “just” their gums is such a huge benefit. This can lead to better, more lasting benefits for the patients, and even potentially preventing more serious health issues down the line.

Dr. McGlennen: What is your favorite part of the MyPerioPath® results? Why?
Dr. Alikhanyan: The analysis of pathogens. It is always exciting to see exactly what we are fighting and how much bacteria are present. The more bacteria involved, the more reassuring it is to the patient that they are in the right place, pursuing the care they need to feel better.

Dr. McGlennen: How do your patients respond to this technology? What is their #1 question?
Dr. Alikhanyan: As a holistic provider, my patients welcome this technology.

Dr. McGlennen: If a new OralDNA® provider were to ask you for advice, what would be your best tip?
Dr. Alikhanyan: Following up and scheduling re-testing as needed, is key. Part of your plan needs to include long-term maintenance, otherwise you don’t know if your treatment modalities are working. This can be financially challenging for the patient.

Dr. McGlennen: Where do you see salivary diagnostics in 3-5 years? 10 years? What would be the impact on your practice/patients?
Dr. Alikhanyan: I hope to see more detailed reports, as well as different treatment options aside from antibiotics, such as supplements, or other more natural supports. I also hope to see more research and guidance on the transmissibility of these bacteria in family members and significant others.
